Pastoral care is the ministry of care and counseling provided by clergy, licensed Eucharistic visitors, and other trained lay leaders to members of the congregation. St. Luke’s pastoral ministries include home visitations, formal and informal counseling by clergy, and referral to licensed counselors. Pastoral care can encompass a wide variety of needs, including health, social and moral education, behavior management, and emotional support. It’s not just the work of clergy; we all exercise pastoral care. For information on these ministries, contact info@stlukesaltoona.org.

Eucharistic Visitors
Eucharistic Visitors take the sacrament to those who, for any reason, are unable to participate in public worship and communion for a time.

Short-Term Pastoral Counseling for Couples,
Teens and Families

We offer compassionate support during times of crisis, transition, and stress. We are available to help those needing help by identifying coping strategies, spiritual resources and appropriate referrals.

Intercessory Prayer Tree is comprised of a group of parishioners who agree to raise each other and those on the parish intercessory list in prayer on a daily basis. Communication between prayer tree members is mainly by email and telephone. A community Day of Prayer for Peace and Reconciliation is held each year on the Monday preceding Ash Wednesday. Call the parish office at 814-942-1372 or email your Intercessory Prayer Requests here.

Luke’s Disciples offer an occasional meal; a ride to the doctor, grocery store, or pharmacy; or a phone call to let people know that they are in our thoughts and prayers.

Health Ministries include blood pressure screening, offered on the first Sunday of the month after both services, and occasional workshops on health-related topics. Some speakers at the monthly Senior Luncheons have presented health and safety-related topics.

Worship service in the Episcopal Church are frequently followed by a time of fellowship and hospitality. Parish families and individuals sign up to host coffee hours held each Sunday following the morning worship services.

Parish Life
The Parish Life Committee organizes fellowship activities to invite newcomers to meet other parishioners, to strengthen relationships, and to enjoy each other’s company. Regular activities include winter and summer progressive dinners, Family Game Nights, and amusement park adventures, and a knitting group. Other activities have included parish-sponsored trips to the Philadelphia Flower Show, forums at the Washington National Cathedral, as well as holiday events. An annual St. Nicholas Brunch is traditionally held on the Fourth Sunday of Advent and includes a Sunday School play as well as a visit from “St. Nicholas.”

Thanksgiving Day Meal

On Shrove Tuesday, St. Luke’s annual Pancake Supper attracts people from throughout the community. For the past several years, St. Luke’s has hosted a community Thanksgiving Day meal that has drawn extended families as well as people who might be otherwise be alone that day.

The parish occasionally offers the Logan House Dinner Theatre, which includes a both an elegant dinner and a play, written by parishioners, reflecting the history of the Logan House Hotel and Altoona in the early days of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
